Stellar Kalajoki socks

I started a new pair of socks while I am waiting for my KnitPicks order to arrive. The pattern is called Kalajoki (this link is in Finnish, but non-Ravelry users can at least see what it looks like), named after a winding river in Finland, and it has a winding river of stitches down the foot. I decided to use my hand-dyed blue/purple yarn because it would be perfect for river-y socks.

This yarn is awesome. I dyed it with Wilton’s icing coloring, and I call it Stellar after the Incubus song. The dye came out so amazing and lovely, and Stellar is one of my highest compliments. Since this is a primarily stockinette sock aside from the river, it will really show off the colors well.

I am a little unsure about the fit of these socks. It called for size 2.5 needles, which I didn’t even know existed. I am using size 2’s, and so far it seems like they will fit. But I am used to knitting socks on 1’s with 64 stitches (these are 54 on size 2), so I don’t know if they will end up fitting or not. Oh well, I'll keep going and see what happens!

You can't really see the pattern emerging yet, but check out the colors :D

One interesting note about the river - these are not cables. The winding is created by adding and decreasing stitches at the beginning and end of the river pattern. Easy and fun!

  1. OH I LOVE THAT! Where is the pattern! I am so for not using cables in my socks (mostly because I am LAZY! lol) I love the colors! I wish I had the time/patience to dye yarn! Good job Annie! :)
